As a writer, I sometimes fear seeing the movie of a book I love- you just never know if it will match your mental vision. But apparently, these filmmakers did a good job, as these babies grew from books to movies in a way seamless enough to win Oscar Nominations.

Themes that seem to strike a chord when making the transition from page to screen: coming through difficulties to become the person you always wanted. Witness historical Oscar favorites, such as "The Color Purple"- we all love it when an underdog triumphs.

Mom Sarah Pekkanen’s just like every other suburban DC mom in a Honda Odyssey- except for the double life.

It may seem like the tipping point for social media has come and gone, and we’ve all Facebooked and Blipped our way into jadedness. But not so fast! A recent Mashable article by Jessica Faye Carter asserts that women still have scads of opportunity in the social media world.

How, exactly?

Lindsay Maines

Lindsay Reed Maines (AKA Rock and Roll Mama) is no paragon of hipness. She drives a grey minivan, wrangles her three kids in the suburbs, and really doesn't get the whole skinny jean fad. She's OK with never eating a hot meal again and sharing a bed with many small elbows and knees to the head. But she believes there are some parts of life that moms shouldn't have to compromise on: like loving their own music. She's married to the bass player for a rock band, Clutch, and holds down the fort with their 12, 5, and 3 year old while he tours for the better part of the year. Whenever she can, she takes off to catch a show, as live music recharges her batteries like a quad espresso with no crash. She believes that staying in touch with your "Inner Janis" (as in Joplin) makes for happier moms: Because every girl deserves her own soundtrack. All-time favorite song: Changes weekly, but usually anything by Aretha Franklin. Favorite Kid Music Activity: Dance Party to the Beastie Boys or Barenaked Ladies "Snacktime" album. Favorite Quote: "Music sustains us from the inside out and makes us all feel spiritually connected." Joy Rose, founder of Mamapalooza. Lindsay's work has been published in The Washington Post and Brain, Child magazine. She blogs at rockandrollmama.com, and is @rockandrollmama on Twitter.
