If you've been feeling the earth loving urge to green up your laundry routine, now is the time to do it! Enjoy doing the washing/drying/folding/putting away that much more knowing your clothes will be consciously cleaned.
Simplify your soap by making your own laundry detergent! Sara Sophia from the effervescent blog about parenting and sustainable style, Tout Est Des Roses, shares her lovely recipe for detergent with us:
Powdered Detergent
- 2 cups finely grated soap (she uses Dr Bronner's soap and grates it by hand or in a processor)
- 1 cup washing soda
- 1 cup Borax
1. Mix well and store in an airtight plastic container.
2. Use 2 tablespoons per full load.
3. That's it!

If making your own isn't your thing, how about buying soap that saves orphans? Yes, it's possible and the detergent is still homemade (just not by you). Lora Lynn from the hilarious parenting blog Vitafamiliae has started her own business called Hope Suds with the tagline "Do Laundry. Save Orphans". One hundred percent of the proceeds of Hope Suds goes to assist families with their journey to adopt orphans worldwide. Hopesuds soap is made with natural ingredients, so it will keep your body AND the earth happy.

So what about those dryer sheets? If you're looking to avoid not only the chemicals but the waste as well, Ashleigh from the sweet and inspiring parenting blog Heart and Home, has this great tip to share. She simply takes a bamboo or all cotton cloth and adds some essential oil to the cloth. She likes Rose Oil or the much more affordable Rosewater Oil. Throw that cloth in the dryer with your clothes and they'll come out smelling amazing!
Even though you still have to tackle Mount Laundry, hopefully now it will be with a little eco-friendly smile!
