I am one of those women who doesn't really care for Valentine's Day.

In fact, I might just get mad if my husband got me chocolate and roses on February 14.  I would know that he never even thought about giving me a gift for Valentine's Day, but bought it because his mom asked him to.

"Man is man because he is free to operate within the framework of his destiny. He is free to deliberate, to make decisions, and to choose between alternatives. He is distinguished from animals by his freedom to do evil or to do good and to walk the high road of beauty or tread the low road of ugly degeneracy." – Martin Luther King Jr.

Post offices are closed; trash likely won’t get picked up and for many moms and dads, that’s an inconvenience to their Monday.

When I was growing up, I took most of my family traditions for granted. It wasn’t until my parents split up that I realized just how important some traditions were. It was during that time that I realized that sometimes it isn’t about the actual event or things that make the tradition memorable, it’s the people involved. I distinctly remember one year giving my brothers and sister heck for not wanting to go pick out the Christmas tree for our dad’s house. We had done it every year as a family for as long as I could remember.

What are the two things you run out for at the last minute when preparing Christmas dinner? Seasonings and utensils. Today I will address the essentials you need to be sure you have on hand when cooking Christmas dinner.

No one wants to have to make a last minute substitution because they forgot something at the store. When you are making a list of the grocery items you need, don’t forget the utensils. Unless you have a large family, most people don’t use every pot, pan and spatula in their kitchen unless it is Christmas.

There are only a few more days left until the big guy loads his sleigh and makes the long trek to kids’ houses everywhere… filling their stockings and leaving wonderful surprises underneath the tree. It’s pretty exciting for me to be part of the Santa experience, and I really, HONESTLY, don’t mind not getting credit for some of the great things the children will get.

Kids though, just like grown-ups like to play Santa too. Once kids reach the age of five or six and see that money has value and what you can DO with money, it’s only natural that they want a piece of the action too.

I have many fond memories of this time of the year, growing up in a large family. It seems like the hustle and bustle of Christmas preparations took precedence over many other things, but family was always at the height of priorities. Even as we decided on gifts for friends and family members, we always asked ourselves the question of whether or not the gift would isolate the recipient or bring them closer together with their family.

I love this time of the year, when it is the time to start thinking about holiday decorating. We will be spending the holidays skiing at the Park City Mountain Resort in Utah this year, so I am in a hurry to get the holiday decorations in my home up even earlier than normal, so we can enjoy the holidays at home before our trip. I decided that today is the day to get started.
