There’s a certain expected behavior that comes with being a parent. You must be tough but kind and friendly yet cold when necessary. Too much of one and not enough of the other can lend you to either being the “mean parent” or the “cool parent”. Striking a balance of them both is a highwire act that even the most skilled trapeze artists find difficult to perform.

But as the hectic holiday season draws near, my Charlie Brown Christmas theme song screeches to a halt, and the reality of prepping for the celebrations looms large.

That’s when I do what I always do in a pinch: I call my girls.

It's a tradition in my neighborhood to have a mimosa brunch the first day of school. For many this is just what they need after the somewhat anticlimactic drop off or bus pick-up when they are left saying, "Now what?". We have the answer, and it's in a little plastic cup with orange juice and champagne.
