I sit and go through old photos, looking at myself at all different sizes. Almost like a catalogue of the trials of my life.

"Oh that was the happy year, I loved my flat stomach."

"Why do I look so bad?  Oh that was the year my oldest son was diagnosed with autism."

There's the pre-child skinny, the ups and downs since then.  Sometimes old photos depress me, but other times they serve as perfect motivation.  Both the "bigger" and the "smaller" pictures remind me that I CAN DO THIS.

Remembering to take a pill, place the patch, make an appointment for a shot –It’s all just irritating. So, when I discovered the Mirena - a low-hormone, place-it-and-forget-it IUD – I was cautious, but did my research and decided that the pros far outweighed the cons. After all, my husband and I needed a break in the baby-making department for a while.

For some kids, Halloween isn’t just about trick or treat, but trick, treat, wheeze, or get hives. For little ones with allergies, it can be a bittersweet occasion. As a parent, you want your child to have the experiences other kids do, but not at the expense of their health.

I was planning to write a great, inspiring post about how to take care of yourself during the flu season and not destroy your budget doing it. (You know: Wash your hands, get a flu shot and all that good stuff)...

One of the best things in life is a good smell, whether it be that newborn baby smell, the scent of your grandma's banana bread, or the aroma of beef stew on a fall day.  Good smells make us feel happy and at peace, remind us to slow down and enjoy.

As a mom I often have those not-too-fabulous aromas in my house as well, especially in a house with all boys!  But even those smells remind me of home.  The sweat, the dirt, the dog, all of if combines to punctuate this life I've created.

A couple of months ago I decided to go hard core on my diet and see if I could detox and heal and try to get my sad and slow thyroid working again.  It involved eating only vegetables, fats and protein.  No fruits, no grains of any kind, no unhealthy oils.  It was the hardest week of my life.

It’s been said many times that beauty is only skin-deep.  No matter how you slice it, if you plan on aging gracefully, it is necessary to take care of your skin.  When I was a junior in high school I had a fun but crazy Fine Arts teacher who told us repeatedly that the one thing she learned in life was to moisturize.   While I can no longer remember specific works from the Rococo period, the suggestion to moisturize is one that stayed with me, and the bigger message of taking care of my skin managed to register as well.

Growing up I always loved to journal, sometimes I'd be talking to myself, sometimes it would be letters I would imagine sending to boys, mean girls, teachers, etc. but would never actually send.  I chronicled my life, kept track of the ups and downs, created something that I could go back and re-read someday and remember.

Now that I'm concentrating on my health and weight loss and feeling good, I realized that I could journal about this as well.  Not just for the emotional roller coaster, but as a practical matter.  Here's what I do:
