It’s almost time to stop the lazy days of sleeping in and get back to the business of routine and education. (Yeah, right, like our kids EVER let us sleep in.)

I’m a firm believer in beating the heat by refusing to participate in it. Sometimes, a little air conditioning goes a long way. I live in Maryland. From June to mid-September, it’s a semi-tropical swampland. There are bugs and mosquitoes, and most of all the wet blanket of heat that makes each dash to the minivan feel like a steam-bath.

So during what I think of as the “Carseat Buckle Burning Months”, my style is less a graceful coexistence with the heat and more of a starlet being chased by the paparazzi sprint away from it. Here’s a few of our top hits:

The school year is winding down all over the country. The temperature is rising. Are you ready, moms?

I reached a near panic the other day when I realized my kids would soon be out of school, with plenty of free time to fill. While they may prefer hours in front of the TV, I am determined to fill their summer with activities- preferably the free or cheap kind!

There are a million things to do in the world and for me, cooking is at the heart of it all.  I'm always amazed at the creativity chefs have but even more impressed when I see kids getting creative in the kitchen.

There is definitely something to be said for planning your pregnancies. Anyone who knows me, knows that each one of my boys were surprises and that’s good, because I like surprises that come in the form of a baby, what I don’t like about surprises is that sometimes the timing of them is way off.

When I was pregnant with each of the kids, part of the excitement for me was flipping through the baby name books. I wanted to pick out a name that sounded just right. When you factor in that I have such a common last name, it was important to me to find something equally as uncommon for the kids. I didn’t want another Mary, Jane, or Bob Smith running around. I wanted to give the kids something different that wouldn’t let people confuse them with another kid in their class. My husband (Brian) lived through that growing up and we wanted our kids to have a better experience.

When you look at families like Jon and Kate Gosselin and Nadia Suleman, the idea of raising a family that big seems unrealistic and almost irresponsible to many people. I suppose that Nadia and the Gosselins aren’t the best examples, considering the media scrutiny that they are constantly under - but for the average mom and dad heading to Target or out to dinner with a troop that resembles the movie Cheaper by the Dozen, it doesn’t stop people from shaking their heads and wondering: “What are they thinking?”

This took me a long time to figure out. But a few years ago I finally realized that I can't make anyone do anything. Period. And this is a life lesson I am trying to pass down to the Twofer.

You can't make someone...

like you

do what you want them to do

be nice

stop doing something

say the right thing

care

But what can you do?
